Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Reno NV
207 AM PDT Sun Jun 1 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Gusty southwest winds and dry air will continue into Monday,
leading to localized critical fire weather conditions and
hazardous recreation on regional lakes today.

* Isolated high-based thunderstorms are possible each afternoon
through Tuesday, mainly across Mono, Alpine, and Mineral Counties.

* Temperatures begin a gradual cooling trend today, with highs
returning to near seasonal normals by midweek along with improved
  overnight humidity.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Sunday-Monday:

* High pressure aloft is weakening as a trough over western Canada
deepens, tightening the pressure gradient across the Great
Basin. This setup will produce widespread gusty southwest winds
30-40 mph region-wide - with localized gusts near 50 mph in
wind-prone valleys. These winds, paired with critically low RH
(7-15%), will maintain localized critical fire weather
conditions today, with a Red Flag Warning still in effect for
much of western Nevada and the eastern Sierra. A Lake Wind
Advisory is also in effect today through 9 PM PDT for most area
lakes, excluding Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, and Boca Reservoir.
Temperatures begin a downward trend today, with highs a few
degrees cooler than Saturday. Isolated dry thunderstorms may
develop by late afternoon over Mono, Alpine, Mineral, and
southern Lyon Counties, where elevated DCAPE (850-950 J/kg)
could support dry lightning and gusty outflows.

Tuesday-Wednesday:

* The Baja low remains nearly stationary, allowing modest mid-
level moisture to creep northward across the southern Sierra.
Isolated storms may continue across Mono and Alpine Counties
during peak heating hours, while much of the region sees
increased mid/high cloud cover and moderating winds. Afternoon
highs drop to near- normalmid to upper 80s in western NV and
70s in Sierra valleys - with improved overnight RH recoveries.

Thursday-Saturday:

* Stable ensemble guidance shows broad weak troughing remaining in
place late week. This will maintain seasonal temperatures and
limit convective potential outside of isolated afternoon storms
near the Sierra Crest in Mono County. Continued cooling, lighter
winds, and increased RH will help suppress additional fire weather
concerns as the pattern settles into a quieter and more stable
  regime.

.AVIATION...

Today:

* Gusty southwest winds will ramp up by late morning with gusts
30-40 kts at KRNO, KCXP, KMEV, and KMMH. Expect some low level
turbulence and mountain wave activity, especially near the
Sierra crest. Isolated high-based thunderstorms are possible
after 21Z near KMMH and the southern Sierra, with potential
  outflow gusts to 40 kts.

Tonight:

* Post-frontal winds slowly decrease after sunset but remain
breezy in open terrain. Mid-level clouds (FL120-FL180) increase
across the southern Sierra and western NV. Isolated convection
may linger through 03Z near KMMH. LLWS risk is low, but some
  terrain-driven turbulence could persist.

Monday:

* Another round of gusty southwest winds redevelops by 18Z,
with terminal gusts of 25-35 kts likely. Isolated TSRA chances
remain for southern Mono County. VFR will prevail, but low level
turbulence and density altitude issues will continue to impact
  general aviation operations.

.FIRE WEATHER...

* A Red Flag Warning remains in effect through 11 PM Sunday for
zones 274, 420, 421, and 429 due to critical fire weather
conditions. Gusty southwest winds will peak this afternoon, with
35-45 mph gusts widespread and up to 50 mph in wind-prone areas.
Minimum RH will fall to 7-15% today, with poor overnight
recoveries in the 20-35% range. Despite marginal curing, recent
activity suggests fuels are receptive to new ignitions.

* Isolated dry thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and
evening, especially across Mono, Alpine, Mineral, and southern
Lyon Counties. While confidence in storm development remains
moderate (10-20%), dry sub-cloud layers and gusty outflows could
result in lightning starts and holdovers. Similar convective
coverage is expected Monday, primarily south of Highway 50. Fire
concerns gradually ease Tuesday onward as RH improves and wind
  speeds decline.
